Representative Scott Peters

Dear [salutation],

Today I voted NO on the partisan Republican budget bill that would allow the cost of healthcare and energy to skyrocket for millions of Americans. San Diego families already pay the price for Republicans’ economic policies; they should not be forced to pay the price for their shutdown. If Republicans continue to refuse to work with Democrats to keep the government open, they will force troops to work without pay, harm small businesses, risk air travel disruptions, and endanger access to Head Start for families struggling to pay for childcare.

You can find a detailed FAQ on what a shutdown would mean for essential services and San Diego families here.

Casework Success

Brittany from Point Loma reached out because she was concerned about the future of her research at UC San Diego following NIH grant disruptions. She tried to reach out to the NIH but didn’t receive any response or updates on her grant. My office was able to facilitate communication between Brittany and the NIH’s Office of Legislative Policy and Analysis. In August, Brittany received a Notice of Award for Year 2 of her lab.

Strengthening Union Research Jobs

Rep. Peters speaks to a crowd at the Pharmaceutical Industry Labor Management Association event.

On Tuesday, I spoke at a reception for the Pharmaceutical Industry Labor Management Association. The partnership between unions and our life sciences industry is critical to developing and protecting world-class research, lab, and manufacturing jobs. In California alone, there were 237 life sciences industry-funded projects between 2019 and 2024. This led to 14.9 million union labor hours and generated $588 million in union wages. I’ll keep working to strengthen our life sciences industry so they can continue providing good paying union jobs for San Diegans.

Advocating for Clean Energy and Permitting Reform

Rep. Peters speaks to a crowd at the National Clean Energy Week policy symposium
Rep. Peters speaks at a Problem Solvers Caucus press conference regarding their permitting reform policy framework

On Wednesday, I spoke at the National Clean Energy Week (NCEW) Policymakers Symposium. For the first time in a long time, the United States is about to experience a significant increase in the demand for electricity. That’s a problem for every American. Last year, we were implementing an all-of-the-above energy strategy to increase supply and lower costs. Now that President Trump is cancelling wind and solar projects, Republicans are only interested in "some-of-the-above," which seems to only include natural gas. We’ve taken an ideological U turn from a pragmatic, competitive energy policy to one with limited supply and much higher energy bills. This self-induced failure does not Make America Great and I remain committed to making renewable energy a key part of any energy deal.

This week, I released a bipartisan permitting reform framework with the Problem Solvers Caucus. Our plan would update our environmental laws to meet today’s challenges and invest in a grid for this century so the U.S. can lower energy costs with abundant, all-of-the-above sources.

Working with Local Partners

Rep. Peters' Chief of Staff speaks on a panel at SDG&E's nonprofit capacity building event.

On Monday, my Chief-of Staff, MaryAnne Pintar, participated in a panel hosted by SDG&E discussing how non-profits can engage with members of Congress to advocate for their causes. I often rely on non-profits in our communities to serve as my eyes and ears on everything from housing and homelessness to education to climate action. We share a common goal: serving San Diegans and improving quality of life. With President Trump’s relentless attacks on our communities and the chaos surrounding critical grant funding, effective partnerships between nonprofit organizations and elected officials are more important than ever.

Scott’s Reads

  • This article from the Guardian gives a fair and honest account of how we can condemn violence of all kinds following the horrific shooting of Charlie Kirk, without rewriting history about his values or what he stood for.

  • A longer read, but the EcoModernist dives into public perceptions around climate and energy policies and what climate advocates and Democrats can do to address our climate goals with broad support.

Finally, I aim for this newsletter to be an informative, fact-based recap of what’s happening in Washington and the work I’m doing to address what’s important to San Diego. If you know someone who would appreciate these updates like you do, please feel free to forward this email or encourage them to sign up to receive them here.

Thanks, and take care.
