Representative Scott Peters

Dear [salutation],

President Trump is making every effort to distract and deflect from bipartisan calls to release the Epstein files – something he promised to do on the campaign trail –amid mounting evidence that he is in the files. This week, Speaker Johnson refused to allow a vote calling for the Trump Administration to release the files within 30 days. He even called a bipartisan effort to force a vote on the House floor “nonsense.” The American people deserve for Congress to act as the independently elected, co-equal branch of government that we are. The American people also deserve transparency and accountability from President Trump.

Casework Success

The Diversionary Theatre, located in University Heights, reached out for assistance obtaining their refunds from the IRS for Employee Retention Credits. My office worked with the theater’s staff to gather various tax documents and other information to be sent to the Taxpayer Advocate for further review. This month, their pending applications were finally processed, and they received their refund of $39,195.67.

Speaking at the House Natural Resources Committee

Screenshot of Rep. Peters' recorded remarks at the House Natural Resources Committee

On Tuesday, I spoke as a guest at the House Natural Resources Committee about the urgent need to reform our permitting processes to better compete with China, keep our lights on, and keeps energy rates from skyrocketing. I also made it clear that Republicans and the Trump Administration must faithfully implement any bipartisan energy legislation. President Trump is attempting to undermine wind and solar energy projects by requiring Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s personal approval for even the most routine activities. Republicans’ unwillingness to stand up to President Trump is complicating our work. Still, I’ll keep at it because we don’t have time to wait to build the clean, reliable, and affordable energy system of the future.

Introducing Legislation to Tackle our Housing Crisis and Boost Public Transit

This week, I re-introduced my bipartisan, bicameral bill to encourage the construction of low- and middle-income housing in transit-served, walkable locations. The cost of housing in San Diego and throughout California is just too high. It forces people into longer commutes and worsens our climate crisis. My Build More Housing Near Transit Act will get more cars off the road and increase affordable housing options for families across the country.

Speaking with Environment and Energy Stakeholders

Rep. Peters speaks to a crowd at the EESI event

On Thursday, I spoke at the Environmental and Energy Study Institute’s (EESI) Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency EXPO. The climate crisis requires Congress to work together to deliver results. I discussed my work to pass bipartisan permitting reforms so we can meet our climate action goals at a rate that meets the urgency of this crisis. I also asked attendees to help advocate for science-based climate and energy solutions by educating community members and Members of Congress on their work to reduce harmful emissions, strengthen the economy, and make our communities more climate resilient.

Scott’s Reads

  • The EPA has proposed a plan that would rescind the federal government’s ability to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions. The New York Times explains what the “endangerment finding” is and the court cases and scientific evidence that led to the 2009 declaration.
  •  This article details how wildfires are now limiting our forests’ natural ability to capture carbon dioxide and slow global warming.

Lastly, I aim for this newsletter to be an informative, fact-based recap of what’s happening in Washington and the work I’m doing to address what’s important to San Diego. If you know someone who would appreciate these updates like you do, please feel free to forward this email or encourage them to sign up to receive them here.

Thanks, and take care.
