I participated in the Point in Time Count this January which brought thousands of volunteers from across the county out at 4am to talk to our homeless neighbors, learn more about their stories, and collect data on their experiences. This critical event helps me better advocate for solutions, and it ensures San Diego receives its fair share of resources to address our homelessness crisis.
The results were recently released and, for the second year in a row, homelessness has decreased in San Diego. Most notably, unsheltered veteran homelessness declined by 12 percent and transitional-age youth (18–24) unsheltered homelessness dropped by 26 percent. Local efforts to bring people off the street and offer shelter, supportive services, and more is making a difference. This is encouraging news and it shows that investing in proven solutions works to address this crisis. But more must be done to ensure every person has a safe, secure, affordable place to sleep every night.
