Dear [salutation],

Today we honor Juneteenth, a pivotal event in our nation’s history when news of freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, TX – more than two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. We must never forget the work that was done to make this a federal holiday that reflects on the injustice of slavery. Today, Juneteenth is both a joyful celebration of freedom and resilience, and a call to action in our ongoing fight toward a more perfect union.

On Monday, I joined Reps. Mike Levin (CA-49) and Sara Jacobs (CA-51) at the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s annual Congressional Luncheon. This event is always a great opportunity to catch up with local leaders and talk about how our Congressional delegation is working together to support our workers and strengthen our business community.

This year, we talked about the widespread cost-of-living crisis, how President Trump’s immigration agenda is hurting families and our economy in San Diego, our ongoing work to end the cross-border sewage pollution crisis in the Tijuana River Valley, and more. The uncertainty surrounding federal policy under the Trump Administration causes real challenges in our community, but I remain committed to fighting for San Diego’s needs in Washington.

On Tuesday, I spent the day in the northern parts of CA50. I visited the Drug Enforcement Administration's southwest regional lab in Vista, saw the upgrades happening along Grand Ave and a new wildfire resilient housing community in Escondido, checked out some new technology being developed at Sony in Rancho Bernardo, and learned about flood and disaster risk reduction efforts at the Hydrologic Research Center.

District Work Periods are important times for me to connect with community members, businesses, and organizations and learn how I can best support them and the work they’re doing. CA50 is full of innovative, collaborative people and it’s an honor to represent them in Congress.

A Community Still Mourning

On Thursday, I met with Imam Taha Hassane from the Islamic Center of San Diego. Last month’s horrific shooting killed Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad - brave men who gave their lives to save others. This was a hate crime against a community gathered in peace and prayer, committed by two teenagers who should not have been able to access firearms in their homes.

I wanted to take some time to meet with the Imam and ask how he and the community are healing after such a senseless act of violence. He shared that they are recovering, slowly. Families have returned to services, but kids still ask about Amin, the security guard and kind presence they lost. He shared that they truly appreciate the love and prayers they’ve received, but that more must be done to prevent online hate speech from becoming bullets that kill innocent people. We should all take more care in the way we talk to each other and remember that we are one community, one country. Being divided against ourselves hurts everyone.

I will do everything I can to support the Center in their recovery and I will continue to fight for common sense gun safety measures in Congress until our communities are no longer terrorized by gun violence.

The Path to Strengthen Balboa Park’s Future

Balboa Park is 1,200 acres of museums and cultural centers, trails, gardens, and recreational spaces. We must all do our part to support the Park and ensure residents and tourists can enjoy it for generations to come.
