Representative Scott Peters

Dear [salutation],

There’s been a lot of discussion recently about proposals that would prohibit members of Congress and their immediate family members from owning or trading individual stocks. People are rightfully concerned that members of Congress may have inside information from our jobs that would give us an unfair advantage in the markets.

I agree that members of Congress should not be trading individual stocks. Many years ago, my wife and I did what proposed legislation would require – we shifted our investments from individual stocks to mutual funds where investment decisions are out of our control. We also take great care to comply strictly with all reporting and disclosure requirements to avoid any conflict of interest, or even the appearance of one.

And I would vote for such legislation, but it needs to cover the President and his cabinet members as well. The level of self-dealing in the Trump Administration is beyond any corruption we have ever seen in our government.  To truly restore and strengthen public trust in the federal government, we must call out President Trump’s brazen corruption and the ways he is using the office of the Presidency to enrich himself, his family, and his allies.

Profiting off the Presidency at Americans' Expense

President Trump and his sons have made astronomical profits from their memecoin, often from foreign investors, and from deregulating the cryptocurrency industry. In the first half of 2025 alone, the Trump Organization's income rose from $51 million to $864 million. A venture capital firm that Don Jr. is a partner of just received $620 million from the Defense Department to develop “drones, radar systems and other military applications.” Foreign policy experts have also recognized a “pay to play” system that benefits the Trump family and those they do business with, both at home and abroad. Don Jr. and Eric Trump have broken ground on new international golf courses, received permission for new skyscrapers, and rented out the Trump brand.

Members of his Cabinet and top advisors also benefit from the President’s astonishing lack of ethical compliance. David Sacks, one of President Trump’s top technology officials and a longtime Silicon Valley venture capitalist, stands to profit tremendously from several recent A.I. related executive orders – which Mr. Sacks helped craft. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has recorded a series of taxpayer-funded ads costing more than $200 million intended to “stem illegal immigration.” Contracts for the ad campaign bypassed the federal government’s longstanding competitive bidding process and went to a company, the Strategy Group, whose CEO is married to Secretary Noem’s chief spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin.

By comparison, when Joe Biden was President, Hunter Biden (who never served in the federal government) sat on the board of a Ukrainian energy company, Burisma Holdings. He earned about $11 million in his role over five years. While pointing out that he was qualified to serve on this board, he conceded that he probably would not have been asked to join the board if he was not a Biden.

The roughly $2 million per year Hunter Biden made pales in comparison to President Trump's sons earning $800 million. But it was wrong. When President Biden pardoned his son in the wake of a Justice Department investigation into this, I spoke out and shared my concern with him using the presidency to protect his family. I’ll continue to speak out now and urge my Republican colleagues to do the same. So far, they have been absolutely silent. To truly restore and strengthen public trust in the federal government, we must end President Trump’s self-dealing and glaring corruption.

Meanwhile, as President Trump and his family and allies get richer, Americans struggle to afford food, rent, electricity, healthcare, childcare and more. In California alone, families have spent over $1,100 more on the same items each month since President Trump took office.

Scott’s Reads

  • The Center for American Progress set up “Trump’s Take,” a real-time financial tracker detailing the money and gifts President Donald Trump and his family are receiving while he’s in office. It’s currently at $1.8 billion – and rising.
  • Forbes gives an in-depth analysis of how President Trump’s net worth has skyrocketed from $4.3 billion to $7.3 billion just this year.
  • I’ve been compiling egregious examples of President Trump using the office to benefit himself and his allies at the expense of the American people. I’ll continue to update this thread.

Thanks, and take care.
