On Thursday, I joined housing and homeless service providers for a conversation about how we can best work together to tackle San Diego’s homelessness crisis. Every January, I participate in San Diego’s Point in Time Count to hear directly from people living on the street about their stories and what they need from elected and community leaders. While the results from the last two years have shown decreases in homelessness across our region, we know there’s a lot left to do.
I heard their concerns about the need for stability in funding from the federal government and we talked about how important it is for all the key groups to collaborate in their efforts. The best thing that we can do at the federal level is to incentivize our local partners to make the changes we want to see. This can be done by leveraging federal funding, like the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act that became law in July.
