As we wrapped up the August District Work Period, I enjoyed a busy week meeting with constituents and organizations around CA50. We have a lot to get done on the budget when Congress is back in Washington next week, and I’ll take these conversations and insights from community members back with me as I advocate for what San Diego needs throughout the appropriations process.

On Monday, I met with Outdoor Outreach – a nonprofit that utilizes nature to inspire our youth to see possibility and opportunity in their lives. I heard from young people about the importance of protecting public lands and waters in our region and the connection between environmental health and community well-being. Some of them reside in the Tijuana River Valley and surrounding neighborhoods. They shared with me their terrible experiences from cross-border sewage pollution. I understand their frustrations. I shared some updates on the work to repair the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant and my ongoing efforts with the Trump Administration to end this crisis so these young people can focus on their futures, not worry about the health of their community.

Support for our next Service Academy Students

On Tuesday, my office hosted an informative reception for students interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy. As a Member of Congress, I have the privilege of nominating bright young students to attend one of our nation's five service academies. Attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. The information night allowed students to talk with representatives from the military service academies and members of my office’s nomination selection board, learn more about the schools they wish to attend, and ask questions about the nomination application process.

On Tuesday, I visited the USS Springfield, a Los Angeles class fast attack submarine (meaning a quickly deployable, agile, nuclear powered warship). It was recently shifted to port at Naval Base Point Loma from Guam. I met with Commanding Officer Commander Gregory Storer and discussed their day-to-day routine, operations while they were deployed in the Western Pacific, and the qualifications needed to become a submariner. I also had the chance to chat with some of the sailors and many are glad to be home and others are looking forward to enjoying everything San Diego has to offer!

Opportunities for Economic Mobility for every San Diegan

On Wednesday, I attended the Economic Development Corporation’s roundtable on their Inclusive Growth Skilled Talent Goal. The history of innovation in San Diego, what’s happening today, and the future of innovation all depend on brain power and talent. We need to:

grow talent among the people who already live here
work to make our region less expensive and more competitive
help the small, scrappy San Diego businesses become large, successful San Diego businesses

That’s why the Inclusive Growth Initiative is central to our future as a region. I will do everything I can in Congress to support this work and ensure every San Diegan in every zip code has the chance to contribute to and gain from a truly inclusive and successful innovation economy.

Trump Admin Changes Hurt Our Kids

On Thursday, I hosted a press conference with local elected officials, pediatricians, and childcare providers to highlight President Trump and Secretary Kennedy's recent changes to the childhood vaccine schedule and proposed regulatory changes to Head Start that threaten children’s health and wellbeing. Since 1965, Head Start has helped more than 38 million underserved children succeed in school and go on to lead healthier lives. Decades of research has proven the safety and efficacy of vaccines and disproven the alleged link between vaccines and autism in children. The Trump Administration’s changes threaten kids’ ability to thrive, further strain an already scarce childcare market, and will increase healthcare costs for everyone when kids inevitably get sick from preventable illnesses. As kids begin the new school year and during National Immunization Awareness Month, I encourage parents to stay informed so they can protect their children.
