On Monday, I participated in a roundtable with local childcare providers and business leaders. Affordable, accessible, high-quality childcare is the key to a strong economy and thriving families. I introduced the Providing Childcare for Police Officers Act to expand nationwide a San Diego program that provides childcare to law enforcement officers who work nontraditional hours. I am also a cosponsor of the Protecting Sensitive Locations Act to prohibit ICE enforcement within 1,000 feet of sensitive locations, like our schools, except in true emergencies.
I heard from many parents and advocates that there simply aren’t enough affordable childcare options near their homes or workplaces. Innovative solutions like home providers can help ease the scarcity of options, but we need to make it easier and faster for qualified folks to get licensed. One woman shared that she waited two years to be allowed to operate. Parents can’t wait that long.
I’ll keep working in Congress to incentivize more affordable childcare options through critical tax credits and innovative solutions.
