Representative Scott Peters

Dear [salutation],

Tuesday marked one year since President Trump’s inauguration as the 47th U.S. president. During the campaign, he promised to lower costs on day one and create a “Golden Age” for America. Yet over the last year, his policies and self-serving ego have broken those promises. Americans now pay more for groceries, cars, electricity, healthcare, and other basic necessities. We continue to lose international friends and make new enemies. President Trump is using the White House to enrich himself and his allies.

One year in, are you better off?

Higher Costs

On basic goods: a new report from the Joint Economic Committee shows that California families paid $2,355 more for everyday items last year due to inflation. President Trump announced a series of new tariffs throughout 2025 with the goal of encouraging domestic investments. But tariffs are a tax paid by importers and consumers for products manufactured abroad. A study from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy shows that businesses passed on 96 percent of the increased import costs to consumers. That means Americans are paying the price for President Trump’s tariffs. I’ll continue to speak out about what tariffs do to our businesses, consumers, and our economy, and push back on President Trump’s reckless policy.

On electricity: Americans face an 18 percent rise in electricity costs over the next ten years. We need to build more energy from all-of-the-above sources to meet surging demand, lower costs, and compete against China in energy innovation. Yet the Trump Administration continues to obstruct, pause, or cancel clean energy projects we desperately need. That’s wrong for several reasons, but one key reason is that renewable energy is more cost effective to build than coal, nuclear, and natural gas. That’s why I’m working on legislation to help us meet our energy and infrastructure needs, no matter who’s in the White House.

On healthcare: due to drastic Medicaid cuts in the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” and Republicans letting Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits expire on January 1st, healthcare costs are skyrocketing. Nearly 150,000 San Diegans rely on the ACA tax credits to afford coverage, and more than 125,000 have seen their health care costs surge, including 28,000 people in CA-50 alone. As Americans are forced to delay care or go without health insurance altogether, they will inevitably show up at emergency rooms because a preventable problem went untreated, which will cost the hospital more, deliver worse health outcomes, and raise all of our insurance rates. On January 8th, I voted to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits for three years and I will continue to urge my Senate colleagues to pass this critical relief for millions of Americans.

Less Security

President Trump has instituted a cruel travel ban that betrays our values and demonizes people because of where they are from. He’s broken our promises to our Afghan allies who served with and supported U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan for twenty years. He captured Venezuelan President Maduro and committed the U.S to “run” Venezuela for the foreseeable future with no clear plan or strategy. He wants the U.S. to buy Greenland for “national security” reasons, but we now know that he talked to Norway’s Prime Minister about wanting to acquire Greenland because he did not get a Nobel Peace Prize. He is pushing a false narrative that NATO has never supported the U.S., even though Denmark and other NATO allies fought alongside U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

All of President Trump’s actions and dangerous rhetoric undermine our national security, risk unpredictable escalation, threaten our relationships with our long-held allies, and show the world that the U.S. is not a reliable partner. And none of this makes life easier or more affordable for Americans.

More Corruption

The New York Times published a review from their Editorial Board showing that President Trump has used the office of the Presidency to earn at least $1.4 billion in the last year. That’s equal to 16,822 times the median U.S. household income.

He and his sons have taken in astronomical profits from their memecoin, often from foreign investors, while working to deregulate the cryptocurrency industry. In the first half of 2025 alone, the Trump Organization's income rose from $51 million to $864 million. He accepted a plane – which he will keep after leaving office – as a gift from the Qatari government. It’s now being retrofitted to serve as Air Force One at the expense of the taxpayers. He is demanding $230 million of taxpayer money from the Department of Justice, which could ultimately be approved by people President Trump put in those jobs. He has forgiven fraud and bribery in exchange for loyalty. He  pardoned 1,500 of his supporters who participated in a violent insurrection on January 6th, many of whom had prior criminal records.

To Americans who voted for Donald Trump, I simply ask if this is what you expected or hoped for? If it’s not, you’re not alone. I do not agree with his agenda, but I, too, hoped President Trump would put the American people first and lead the U.S. toward greater prosperity and security. Our government’s sole purpose is to provide national and economic security so people are free to pursue equal opportunities and happiness.

But his policies only push us further from our nation’s ideals. I’ll continue to urge my Republican colleagues to ensure Congress acts as an independently elected, co-equal branch of government and as a check on the Executive Branch the way our Constitution intended.
