On basic goods: a new report from the Joint Economic Committee shows that California families paid $2,355 more for everyday items last year due to inflation. President Trump announced a series of new tariffs throughout 2025 with the goal of encouraging domestic investments. But tariffs are a tax paid by importers and consumers for products manufactured abroad. A study from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy shows that businesses passed on 96 percent of the increased import costs to consumers. That means Americans are paying the price for President Trump’s tariffs. I’ll continue to speak out about what tariffs do to our businesses, consumers, and our economy, and push back on President Trump’s reckless policy.
On electricity: Americans face an 18 percent rise in electricity costs over the next ten years. We need to build more energy from all-of-the-above sources to meet surging demand, lower costs, and compete against China in energy innovation. Yet the Trump Administration continues to obstruct, pause, or cancel clean energy projects we desperately need. That’s wrong for several reasons, but one key reason is that renewable energy is more cost effective to build than coal, nuclear, and natural gas. That’s why I’m working on legislation to help us meet our energy and infrastructure needs, no matter who’s in the White House.
On healthcare: due to drastic Medicaid cuts in the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” and Republicans letting Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits expire on January 1st, healthcare costs are skyrocketing. Nearly 150,000 San Diegans rely on the ACA tax credits to afford coverage, and more than 125,000 have seen their health care costs surge, including 28,000 people in CA-50 alone. As Americans are forced to delay care or go without health insurance altogether, they will inevitably show up at emergency rooms because a preventable problem went untreated, which will cost the hospital more, deliver worse health outcomes, and raise all of our insurance rates. On January 8th, I voted to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits for three years and I will continue to urge my Senate colleagues to pass this critical relief for millions of Americans.
