Representative Scott Peters

Dear [salutation],

Today, I announced a new milestone in earned benefits my office has recovered for the people I have represented in Congress. Since I took office in 2013, my office has secured a total of $23 million in veterans and military benefits, Social Security payments, federal tax refunds, and many other federal benefits.

My office helps turn the cranks of the federal government for people who need it. My staff has also aided thousands of San Diegans with their passports, small business loans, immigration proceedings, student loan applications, and housing.

These services are available free of charge from every Congressional office. When people reach out, we work with them to facilitate communication with a federal agency, help them gather and submit documents, and expedite hearings and appointments. We can’t guarantee an outcome, but we do our best to achieve a positive resolution.

Casework Successes

In September of 2024, Dr. Hodges from Coronado reached out regarding Tricare (the military’s health insurance) reimbursement rates for his business and a group of businesses that provide mental healthcare for 2,400 Tricare members. When Tricare recently transitioned to a new contract provider, the businesses were not being properly reimbursed for care. My staff worked with Dr. Hodges and Tricare to resolve the contract discrepancies. This month, Dr. Hodges' businesses received delayed reimbursements totaling $1 million.

"It was very stressful, but we had confidence in Rep. Peters' office to help us. Now we're glad to be back to serving active duty military members."

Dan from University City reached out to my office for help retrieving his father's Military Personnel File and the medals he was awarded for serving as a Pilot in World War II. Unfortunately, his records were destroyed in the 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center, but a member of my staff was able to piece together records from various sources and secured seven medals from the National Archives. My staff was also able to find summaries of the missions Dan’s father flew during the historic air combat operations conducted over Europe.

"We had been searching for a long time, but you were able to find the medals and their history! We are so grateful."

In September 2024, Alan from Coronado requested assistance with processing a 2019 tax return for his deceased mother. Alan had tried for several years to close out the estate, but after repeated calls to the IRS, was not making progress. My staff worked with Alan to gather various tax and trust documents, which were then provided to the Taxpayer Advocate for further review. This week, the refund was finally issued for $30,301.75.

"Rep. Peters office helped me when I thought I was all alone. I received a flyer from his office in the mail saying people could reach out for help with a federal agency. It was a godsend."

We've helped Bryan from Escondido on three separate occasions with Department of State and visa problems.

"For months, my case remained in limbo with little to no communication from the embassy. It was so nice to have someone who could advocate for us and lift the mental burden."

Both my job title and job description are Representative. That means championing what matters to California’s 50th Congressional district with tireless advocacy in San Diego and Washington. Constituent services is one of my most important roles as a Member of Congress and I’m grateful to my staff who work hard to deliver for the people we represent.

If you need help with a federal agency, please reach out to my office. We’re here to serve you.

Finally, I aim for this newsletter to be an informative, fact-based recap of what’s happening in Washington and the work I’m doing to address what’s important to San Diego. Thanks, and take care.
