Representative Scott Peters

Dear [salutation],

This week, I joined American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and other federal employee union members for a forum on how we can work together to protect the Civil Service and defend workers’ rights.

I also met with organizations doing important work in CA50. I discussed initiatives to improve foster care and homelessness among San Diego’s foster children with Promises2Kids, how we can best support our small businesses with the North San Diego Business Chamber, and the loss of critical funding in the clean energy and technology industry with Cleantech San Diego. And I presented a Congressional Proclamation to Jewish Family Services’ (JFS) outgoing CEO for his years of service to strengthen JFS and our community.

Casework Success

Bill from CA50 contacted my office seeking assistance regarding an award letter he received for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) after suffering a stroke. Bill had successfully submitted his application for disability and received a favorable decision. Unfortunately, the Social Security Administration SSA had not issued his updated benefits for several months, causing financial harm for both Bill and his family. My office submitted an inquiry on Bill’s behalf and within one month, Bill received his benefits and back pay totaling $55,775.

San Diego Delegation Comes Together

Reps. Peters, Levin, Jacobs, Vargas participate in a Congressional Forum with the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce

On Wednesday, I joined the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and Reps. Mike Levin, Sara Jacobs, and Juan Vargas for the annual Congressional Luncheon. We discussed the devastation that Medicaid cuts in President Trump and Republicans’ budget bill would have on healthcare in our communities, San Diego’s critical defense industry, our education priorities, and opportunities for bipartisanship in Congress. I enjoy engaging with our business and community leaders at this event every year as we work toward our shared goals and vision for San Diego.

Celebrating the Revitalized Hotel del Coronado

On Wednesday, I joined local leaders and community members to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Hotel del Coronado following a six-year renovation and restoration project. The renovations preserve the hotel’s original style and charm, while updating it to offer modern luxuries. I look forward to generations of Americans and people from around the world coming here to enjoy everything the Del and our great region has to offer.

Scott’s Reads

Introducing a new section of my newsletter! Every week, I’ll share a few articles I’ve read during the week that I think you should check out.

  • Rep. Jake Auchincloss (MA-04) wrote about the Marine’s deployment to Los Angeles and the unfair position it puts our servicemembers in by having to choose between betraying the Commander in Chief’s orders or betraying their solemn oath to support and defend the Constitution.

  • The Washington Post’s analysis of Speaker Johnson’s and Republicans’ claims that the “Big Beautiful Bill” is fiscally friendly, even after the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reported that it would add trillions to our national debt. Read here for what the bill really means for our economy and our fiscal future.

  • In a Washington Post opinion piece, Mackenzie Knight-Boyle, a senior researcher at the Federation of American Scientists, wrote about the dangers of the President having the sole authority over nuclear strikes. Last month, I introduced a bill to limit the President’s authority to launch a preemptive nuclear attack.
