On the first day of early voting in California, I brought my colleagues Reps. Mike Levin (CA-49) and Sara Jacobs (CA-51) together with University of San Diego Professor Carl Luna to discuss how the Republicans’ “SAVE America Act” would disenfranchise San Diego voters. If it became law, every American, including people who have been registered for decades, would need to go in person to an election office with qualifying documents. And a standard driver's license is not a qualifying document. Read more about the SAVE Act, and who it would impact the most, here.
Even the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, found that cases of voter fraud were less than one percent of votes cast. They analyzed hundreds of millions of votes cast in several swing states over multiple decades and found less than 100 cases of voter fraud per state. Since 1982, California has had a total of 71 cases of voter fraud. Voter fraud is exceedingly rare. I will continue to urge my colleagues in the Senate to stand up for the fundamental right to vote and reject this legislation, and I will always work to make it easier, not harder, to participate in our democracy.
