Representative Scott Peters

Dear [salutation],

This week President Trump took over, or “federalized,” California’s National Guard without consent from the governor — something that is only allowed under very specific circumstances and hasn’t happened since the 1960s. Yesterday, Senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from a public press event with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem by federal agents while trying to ask a question. These aggressive and undemocratic incidents are what you would expect of Russia or another authoritarian country, not in America.

$134 MILLION. That’s how much the Department of Defense will spend to send the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles, though LA County law enforcement never said they needed the help.

Secretary Noem says Homeland Security officers will remain in Los Angeles until they “liberate this city” from “burdensome leadership.” That’s a purely political statement from someone who is supposed to impartially carry out our laws. Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass have repeatedly stated that local law enforcement is capable of handling the protests. President Trump’s militarized response is a gross waste of national defense resources. He and his Administration are doing this to hurt states that disagree with him politically and he’s using your tax dollars to do it.

None of this is makes us safer, lowers the cost of living, or improves access to healthcare. I will continue to demand accountability.

Yesterday, I stood with my California colleagues to demand accountability for the undemocratic assault on Senator Padilla.

What if President Clinton Did This?

Tank in front of Washington Monument

In May 1993, President Bill Clinton got a $200 haircut while on board Air Force One at LA International Airport. The media reported that this had tied up ground and air traffic, putting as many as 37 planes in a holding pattern. That later was shown to be false, but the incident became known as “Hairgate.” Republicans criticized Clinton for his “regal” attitude and for using government resources – his government plane, Secret Service time and airport disruption – for personal vanity.

Tomorrow, President Trump will be having a large military parade from the Pentagon in Virginia to the National Mall in Washington DC for his 79th birthday. The parade will include 6,600 soldiers, 150 military vehicles and seven military bands, at a cost to taxpayers of between $25m and $45 million. Ronald Reagan National Airport will be shut down for at least an hour and a half, affecting more than 100 flights and thousands of passengers.

Just as with President Clinton, Republicans are outraged. Nah. Just kidding! Crickets. 🦗🦗🦗

Casework Success

Michael from Downtown is an Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War who was seeking help with his VA pension. He was denied last year because his income was too high but he’s now experiencing financial hardship. My staff worked with him to build his case for priority processing and submit it to the VA. After a year with no response from the VA, my staff was able to facilitate communication with the VA and Michael is now receiving his pension of $268 per month.

Additional Funding Sources for Cross-Border Wastewater Treatment

This week, the House overwhelmingly passed my bill to let the city, county, state, and non-profits contribute directly to the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), which is the primary defense on our side of the border against the cross-border pollution crisis. Our state and local partners have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of this environmental and public health crisis. With these additional funding pathways, we will have the flexibility in case other funding streams dry up, so that we can continue to invest in the long-term health and well-being of our region.
